Dental implants are artificial roots and teeth that are placed to the jaw directly. They are very useful to people who have lost their teeth In one way or another. Dental implants are usually natural looking and feel and act almost exactly like regular teeth.

The first stage involves the dentist examining if the quality of the bone and the quantity of the alveolar bone is sufficient to support the dental implant. This is obtained by use of x-rays and CT- scans which may be carried out to access the quality of the bone and the gum tissues. This evaluation enables the dentist to come up with a treatment that would best solve the case of the patient.

After this, the gum where the implant is supposed to be placed is cut and lifted and a hole is made in the jaw bone at the exact location where the implant should be placed. A local anesthesia is used to make the process painless. The implant is then tightly fitted into the socket and then the gum is stitched back over the implant. In case of insufficient bone material to accommodate the implant, a bone graft maybe required to increase the tissues in the gum to the required standard.

Following the confirmation that the integration of the implant has been successful, a temporary crown or a bridge is constructed. Then the implant is tried in to confirm a perfect fit and then it is cemented permanently. It is left to heal for a period of about two months during which the bone tissue will grow and anchor itself into the rough surface of the implants. After the healing process, the gum will be lifted and a post attached to the implant with a temporary crown. When the surrounding gum tissue has matured the final permanent restoration can be fitted. If any adjustments are needed they are made. Any adjustments to the position of the teeth to improve esthetics, functionality and speech are made.

It is important to ensure that the implant- supported denture has good stability. The retention of the denture could be modified if it is necessary. The bite could also be adjusted to ensure that it is even. The implants should be monitored and maintained properly.
