Fissure Sealants
Your teeth are naturally covered in microscopic pits and fissures. Bacteria can build up in these spaces, out of the reach of your toothbrush or dental floss. The built up bacteria puts your teeth at an increased risk for decay. To reduce this risk, you dentist may suggest applying a fissure sealant.
A fissure sealant is a thin resin material that your dentist paints onto your tooth. The sealant is hardened using a special light. The process is quick and painless. The sealant prevents bacteria from settling into the fissures, making tooth decay less likely.
Sealants are most commonly used for children, who are at a higher risk of developing dental caries. Adults can benefit from sealants, as well. Preventing caries now can reduce dental costs in the future.
If you are interesting in getting your teeth treated with a fissure sealant, don’t hesitate to make an appointment to meet with one of our dentists.
